Is Daniel Cabrera Gone? Yes, More Than Likely...

Is Daniel's time up in Baltimore. Yes it is, according to the Baltimore Sun's Peter Schmuck:

The O's attempted to generate interest in a deal at the winter meetings but apparently found other teams unwilling to take the risk of going to salary arbitration with Cabrera, who made $2.85 million last year and stood to get a significant raise in spite of his 8-10 record and 5.25 ERA.

Apparently, the O's did not make an attempt to re-sign Cabrera for a more reasonable salary, something they still are trying to do tonight with reliever Lance Cormier. The team finally has given up on Cabrera and will leave it to some other club to try and tap his raw talent and unfulfilled potential.

Oh well.

O's Nearly Stage Another Comeback Against the Bucs...

If you weren't at the Yard yesterday -- much less this weekend -- you've missed some incredible baseball by out 2008 Orioles. Well, Sunday was nothing short of incredible, as the Baltimore Orioles nearly came back in an inexplicable fashion, but the Pirates knocked us out the 10th inning. In the end, Baltimore dropped the third game of the interleague series to Pittsburgh, 5-4.

For third consecutive game, Oriole Magic came alive again as Brian Roberts jacked a two-run opposite field home run off Matt Capps in the bottom of the ninth inning with two out. The usually reliable George Sherill came into the game in the tenth inning, but a RBI single by Adam LaRoche’s in the tenth drove in the winning run.

It was later revealed via Roch's blog that Sherill now has a case of "tired arm".

Despite the loss, the Orioles engineered yet an incredible comeback that no one could have foreseen; however, this season, anything is now possible.

However, in light of yesterday's near euphoria, there's one troubling thing that most fans noticed -- could Daniel Cabrera be regressing after perhaps having a breakthrough? After looking like a completely different pitcher in April and May, June has been a return to the Daniel of old -- inconsistent, lacking confidence and command.

A while back, it was discussed on the blog what would happen if Daniel lost a game and would he be able to come back and be effective? That question is now up in the air. Like I said before the season began, Daniel Cabrera may be the one ingredient that may help the Orioles in 2008 or break them. His poor starts have been somewhat overlooked by Baltimore's unexpected performance, but his last three starts have been troubling and his ERA has nearly climbed up a run since then.

Every good pitcher has a poor start every once a while, but most don't have three in a row.

I'll ask again nearly a month later -- do you think Daniel Cabrera could ever be a consistent pitcher at this level, or will we have to get used to his Jeckyll and Hyde performances?

The Good Daniel Cabrera Shows Up; O's Beat Rays Thanks to Huff's Blast, 3-1

The Orioles got back into the win column last night, as they beat the lowly Devil Rays in Tampa, 3-1, thanks to a big three-run homer by Aubrey Huff.

On Friday, the good Daniel showed up as he allowed one run in seven innings, and Danys Baez notched his first save as a Bird.

Looks like the former Devil Rays took advantage and whooped up on their old team.

People, sports is a business and I’m up in arms as to why people are upset that the Orioles did not make a move for Mark Teixiera.

Baltimore had the pieces, and did not want to give them up; however, Atlanta did and the circumstances were right for them.

The price was too high to get him, and the Orioles do not need to give away young talent for a guy who may be more than a year and half rental.

If you are fan, you have got the read Dan Connolly’s piece in the Sun.

I was probably of one of ten people who didn’t think the Orioles should make a move for Teixiera at the price Texas was asking for. I feel that for the meantime, the Orioles should go after him n the free agent market, and not give away young talent – talent, we desperately need.

Let’s keep in mind that Atlanta was where Teixeira went to school, so that place held allure to him too.

Folks, let go after him ’09 and see if Boras will want the Brinks’ truck for him.

Teixiera – good glove, great bat, but the Orioles need more than him right now for sure.

The Baltimore Sun has a recap of the game, as does the Baltimore Examiner, Washington Post, & Orioles Hangout.

We all know Danys Baez was atrocious for a good while, but now it looks like he’s back to form and Dave Trembley hopes that he can help out in the bullpen. Kids, Danys is now the closer…

The Baltimore Sun has a question for Corey Patterson, this time about playing in Tropicana Field.

Kurt Birkins has been recalled from the minors, and Cory Doyne has been sent back down.

The Game Last Night; White Sox Topple Orioles, 5-1

IMGP0130

I’m at RFK covering the Cubs vs. Nationals for the DC Sports Box, so I’ll keep my post brief.

The Orioles lost last night 5-1 in Chicago to the White Sox. Daniel Cabrera, who has the makeup to be one of the best starters in the majors – if he can ever be consistent and get his head together.

Considering Cabrera has been in the majors for a few years now, this is as good as he’ll get?

He can be so amazing, but yet, more often that not, he frustrates the hell out of you.

Meanwhile, the starter for the White Sox, Javier Vazquez who has had an up and down year, dominated the Orioles last night and gave his only via a Kevin Millar homer.

The best pitcher probably in the minors for the Orioles, Garrett Olson gets the start today in Chicago (the article reports Mora play today, and Scott Williamson is on the mend). He was brought up because of the injury to Steve Trachsel, but hopefully he’ll impress, and can get a little more than a cameo this week.

The Baltimore Sun, Baltimore Examiner, and Washington Post has a recap of the game last night.

Roch Kubatko has his thoughts on Daniel Cabrera.

As noted, Garrett Olson is starting for the Orioles tonight in Chicago. As well, The Washington Post has more on him and his expected day later on, so does the Orioles MLB site.

Peter Schmuck believes in light of the Orioles’ failures this season, the front office duo of Mike Flanagan and Jim Duquette deserve high marks for finding Jeremy Guthrie and Brian Burres.

The Baltimore Examiner has a piece on O’s minor leaguer, Wally Crancer and reports that the Aberdeen Ironbirds are stumbling out of the gate as their season began a few weeks ago.

Thoughts and Pictures from Daniel Cabrera at the ESPN Zone this Afternoon...

On a unseasonably cool summer & overcast afternoon, fans got to meet fireball ptcher Daniel Cabrers, as held a Q&A & autopgraph session at the ESPN Zone in Baltimore's Inner Harbor on Friday.

The place was packed as there was a standing room only crowd in the facility as Daniel Cabrera questions from fans about the Orioles and also off the field items.

Although he may be large, in charge and dominating on the mound throwing heat or at times throwing inside or towards a batter to intimidate; however, fans saw a far different side of Daniel than they are used to - a lighter, funny and very engaging one.

All in all, he is extremely likeable, and very personable. I didn't know what to expect, but I was pleasantly suprised with his demeanor and the way he handled himself.

I walked away very impressed with him, and almost to the point where you felt like you knew him.

The Q&A portion went on for a good half-hour, and fans who were able to play hooky from work or visit the ESPN Zone during their lunch hour got to get their memorabilia signed and get some face time with Daniel.

The Game Yesterday, May 6th; The Game Rundown, Picture Gallery, Condensed Video Recap

Indians vs. Orioles - Game Two

I’ll be at the Yard today helping out Oriole Magic!, and I don’t have time to a do a review, so here’s a roundup of articles from the various newspapers that have a full recap from the game last night.

The Orioles last night won 8-2 and the bats have awoken. Roch Kubtako of the Sun has a game recap, and the ‘man’ yesterday was Ramon Hernandez who hit a big 3-run homer and drove in 4 runs.

Big Daniel Cabrera had more than enough support as he pitched 7 great innings, and only gave up a run -- a homer to Victor Martinez.

Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post has a recap of the game, as does the Baltimore Examiner.

As we know by now, the Orioles’ starting rotation is tattered and hurt, but Jeremy Guthrie and Brian Burres are now slotted as starters in the rotation; Adam Kilgore has more on it. Also, because of the injuries, Todd Williams, a familiar face to fans for the past couple of seasons, has been brought back to the majors after spending the first few weeks of the season in the minors.

Todd will be counted on a to be veteran arm in a bullpen that might be overused at this point.

Due to the tragedy with Josh Hancock, the Orioles have taken alcoholic beverages out the clubhouse. Even though it has been talked about for some time within the organization, the move was taken now.

The Baltimore Sun has a question with Nick Markakis, this time about clutch situations.

Quick Hits: The Game Yesterday and the Rundown...

It was fight night in the Motor city --- um, almost.

Our boys in black and orange are in an ugly stretch right now, as they lost to the Detroit Tigers 8-4. The Orioles have lost 8 out of their last 9 games, after a hot start to the year.

The team started of the year doing the little things right and getting timely pitching in; however, now the pitching has been very inconsistent, and the offense has just been plain listless.

Of course, if you missed the highlights or didn’t hear about it, it nearly turned into Monday Night Smackdown. Daniel Cabrera hit Gary Shiffield in back during the third inning as a pitch got away from him, and then as retribution, Jeremy Bonderman (the starting pitching for Detroit) hit Miguel Tejada in the ankle.

Both benches and the bullpens cleared as Tejada and Bonderman got into it and catcher Ivan Rodriguez had to restrain Tejada.

The starter last night for the O’s, Daniel Cabrera was very inconsistent as he walked 6, struck out 5, and allowed 5 runs to come in, in which 4 of them were earned.

Of course, Gary Sheffield got revenge on Daniel Cabrera by hitting a 400+ foot homer to left field in the fifth inning.

The two men glared at one another.

Once again, walks and allowing free passes killed the Orioles and it is becoming a recurring theme.

It looks like Jay Gibbons is coming out of his slump, as he hit his first homer in the 6th inning off Bonderman, and Miguel Tejada, Ramon Hernandez and Cory Patterson each drove in a run to supplant the offense.

John Parrish came into relieve Daniel Cabrera, but gave up 3 runs in the 7th inning to perhaps put the game out of reach for the Orioles.

Chad Bradford and Jeremy Guthrie came into the game in the 8th and 9th innings, respectively, to finish it up.

Tonight, it will be Adam Loewen (2-0, 3.20 ERA) vs. Chad Durbin (1-1, 6.65 ERA).

Spencer Fordin of the orioles.com has a recap of last night’s game, as does the Baltimore Examiner.

Once again, Jaret Wright will return to the DL due to his recurring shoulder issues; therefore, the Orioles brought up reliever Kurt Birkins. As well, Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun reports that it’s uncertain when Jaret Wright will return. Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post reports that Wright has a sore arm.

Well, we all knew this was going to happen – Kevin Millar is frustrated from the lack of playing time. With Jay Payton playing everyday, there was going to sadly be a fight between Millar and Jay Gibbons for time at DH. Sam Perlozzo sure isn’t taking Aubrey Huff out of the lineup at this point…
