The Game Last Night: O's Sweep Royals, 3-0 Win!

Ok, I have had a busy morning with interviews and also work, so here's the rundown. The Orioles won a tight game yesterday 3-0, as Erik Bedard met up with KC's ace, Gil Meche. Jay Payton drove in a run, and Nick Markakis hit a 2-run homer late to give the Orioles some insurance.

Chris Ray got his 12th save, and the O's have won 5 straight. Next up are the Angels of Los Angeles, Anaheim, or whatever they call themselves these days.

If only we could play the Royals everyday...

***

The Baltimore Sun has a recap of last night’s shut-out, as does the orioles.com, and the Washington Post.

The O, By the Way Blog has thoughts from last night’s game, along with other things. As well, Roch Kubatko is his blog has news on Jeremy Guthrie and the AL All-Star voting.

The Orioles pitching has looked real good, especially with the new additions of Brian Burres and Jeremy Guthrie.

Congratulations to Jamie Walker, as he has his wife had a baby boy. However, he named him after someone known to all us O’s and baseball fans – his son’s name is James Leyland Walker. Well, to be honest, I like Jim Leyland and I think it’s a cool thing.

‘In the article, Jamie Walker says: "If people think that I named him after him, that's fine," he said. "We actually picked this name out, but my wife loves Jim Leyland to death anyway. He's a [heck] of a manager, a [heck] of a guy."

Walker said the child was named after his wife's grandfather, whose first name was Leyland, and his father, whose name was James. Both fought in World War II, so Walker and his wife, Natalie, felt that would be an added touch because the child was born on Memorial Day.’ (Baltimore Sun)

A-Rod: Someone Has Some Explaining to Do…

It looks like Alex Rodriguez has been criss-crossing the country with the fit, curvy who has been plastered in the New York Post.

Is this a big story – no.

However, because A-Rod plays on the Yankees, he’s make $25 million per year, and he had an image of a guy who cares too much of how he is perceived in the media, and how fans look at him from home and on the field; it is.

Today, the New York Post dropped yet another bombshell that will tarnish Alex Rodriguez even more.

From the NY Post: ‘Alex Rodriguez hasn't partied only in Toronto with a mystery blonde - the Yankee superstar has also been spotted across the United States squiring around a similar-looking, buxom hottie, The Post has learned.

Several witnesses yesterday said they have seen A-Rod socializing recently with a blond bombshell - not his wife, Cynthia - in Seattle, Las Vegas and Dallas.

In Dallas, two people said Rodriguez and an unknown blonde visited a high-end strip club - just weeks before he and a blond gal pal were spotted by The Post going to a flashy Toronto strip joint on Sunday night.

And there is a photograph taken March 1 showing the All-Star sitting in the Whiskey Bar in Tampa, Fla., with a blonde. She looks similar to the woman he was photographed with in Toronto during the Yanks' current road trip there.’

Wow.

Okay, if I were a professional athlete, I’d perhaps be a lot more careful who I am seen with (but everything is all relative).

It will be a matter of time who we find out who this blonde is, and A-Rod's life will even become more miserable.

For an athlete who has tried to carefully craft his image, he’s heading towards how Kobe Bryant is perceived amongst a good portion of fans.

Allison Stokke Speaks (Video Link); Plus, More Thoughts About Her, the Internet and Blogs...

This week, Allison Stokke became the subject of unwanted attention, as With Leather, the Washington Post, numerous other blogs, My Space, Facebook, and forums made her a celebrity.

It’s crazy who this whole story has blown up. Some of us agree the posting of Ms. Stokke on With Leather was in bad taste, while some agree its okay for anyone to be posted online and to have lewd comments typed about her. Furthermore, some people rant and rave about her beauty and her physical assets.

The fellow who runs With Leather seems to be soaking it up – hey, it got traffic to his blog; nevertheless, at what price?

However, it looks like some restraint and perhaps moral compass is being shown, as her fan site had her pictures removed voluntarily by the administrator. In light of the news, her pictures can be easily (and I mean easily) be found the web and throughout the internet from competitions, with her friends, family, in dull moments, and as well just doing things what everyone else does.

As much as you can find of her, or anyone online, it is quite scary and disturbing.

Today, she spoke out about the whole controversy.

Here is the link on a Los Angeles CBS affiliate: http://cbs2.com/topstories/local_story_151005135.html

While, I don’t think it is a good idea for her to have spoken out, and the family to have consented with the Washington Post for an interview, I think it needed to warn people about the dangers and pitfalls of the internet.

It will be determined whether she wants to parlay this into something else, but for the most part, we all need to lay off her and the Stokke family.

Unlike the Paris Hiltons, the Lindsay Lohans and Britney Spears who flaunt their sexuality for the world to see, Ms. Stokke has not asked for any of the fame she has recently gotten, and from the looks of it does not want it either.

Furthermore, she’s a kid (not to demean her, but that is what she is). If she we 23, 30, 40, the whole context would be much different, but this is just a vulnerable teenager now in the public of the world.

The internet is a vast, vapid place, and while it could be used for good; however, the additive of ‘sex sells’ is a big business on the internet and she seems to have been caught up with it.

It's two days later, and people are still talking about it...

Wither A-Rod: And We Thought You Were a Good Guy...

Well, I guess Alex Rodriguez does not care too much about his public image anymore...

According to the NY Post (with photographic evidence), he was spotted with a woman who was not his wife at dinner and as well his friends on a strip club expedition, plus dinner.

Later, the report says that he went upstairs with the woman.

Nothing like a little mini-scandal to take away from the troubles of the Yankees, if only for one day.

The Game Last Night: O's Win 6-2

It looks like things are finally coming together for the Baltimore Orioles this season, as they beat the Kansas City Royals by a score of 6-2 last night, emerging victorious in their fourth straight game.

Meanwhile, the Kansas City Royals have lost their sixth straight.

The amazing Jeremy Guthrie won, as he allowed two runs and three hits with seven strong innings pitched. Since beginning the season in the bullpen, Guthrie along with Steve Trachsel has been the team’s most consistent pitchers.

The bats were alive for the team once again as Ramon Hernandez drove in 2 runs, including swatting a solo homer in the 6th inning. Nick Markakis, Kevin Millar and Aubrey Huff drove in a run each.

The O’s go for the series sweep tonight as the Orioles’ Erik Bedard counters with Royals ace, Gil Meche.

***

The Baltimore Sun’s Jeff Zrebiec has a recap of last night’s game as does the Baltimore Examiner. Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post pens an article on Jeremy Guthrie and his results last night.

As we all have seen, Miguel Tejada and Melvin Mora have made their share of mental errors this season, and while they have great fielding numbers, they could both use improvement.

Alan Eskew of the Orioles.com notes that the team’s bats have been hot as of late.

The O, By the Way Blog has a recap of the game last night along with other topics.

Adam Kilgore has a piece about Brian Roberts and the art of the stolen base…

The Baltimore Sun has a question with Juan Samuel about what makes a good base stealer…

The Baltimore Examiner Examiner has some minor league news, most important being, the return of Bill Rowell.

Jim Palmer is set to represent that Baltimore Orioles at the 2007 First Year Draft.

Elijah Dukes: Saying Sorry Cures All?

Well, athletes certainly have more rights and are given more chances than pretty much everyone in society.

From ESPN: Troubled Tampa Bay outfielder Elijah Dukes apologized Tuesday for allegations contained in a published report revealing his estranged wife sought a restraining order after being threatened by the 22-year-old rookie.

Dukes spoke briefly before Tuesday night's game against the Detroit Tigers and initially bungled remarks that were not prepared in advance when he mistakenly apologized "to the organization for sticking with me in a situation like this."

The Devil Rays issued a clarification in which Dukes said he misspoke because he was nervous.

"I would like to apologize to my family, teammates, the fans and the organization for the distraction that this situation has caused," Dukes said in the prepared clarification. "I would like to thank them for standing by me and hope that my family and I can move on and put this behind us."

Of courser, he was kept out a few games last week after the St. Petersburg Times reported that his wife needed protection from him due to a text message with gun attached to it and a threatening voice mail. As well, he threatened his wife at the school she teaches.

Ok, he's 22 with FIVE kids.

He threatened to MURDER his wife of two of his children. He's a thug who had a hard life, but obviously hasn't learned a thing.

I swear to frigging God if it were any one of us, we'd be looking at 5 to 10. Even more tragic, if this was the 25th man on the roster, he'd be gone so quickly that he would not have time to collect his belongings.

Ah, talent - how it does pay! If your hands are dirty, as long as you can run, hit and throw the ball, the dirt just comes right off...

I'm sorry solves problems, especially if you're languishing on the bench...

The Idiot File: Michael Vick: Why Does America Honor Him, Because He Throws A Football?

Millions of people, young and old alike, want to be like Michael Vick. As well, in whatever city you travel into, there’s bound to be someone who has a Michael Vick jersey on, or at minimum has a Atlanta Falcon’s cap on.

Now, whatever dignity Michael Vick may have left is slowly evaporating.

From ESPN:

In a weekend interview with ESPN's "Outside the Lines," a source who said he's been involved in dog fighting for more than 30 years referred to Vick as one of the "heavyweights" of the dog fighting world.

"He's a pit bull fighter," the source said of Vick. "He's one of the ones that they call 'the big boys' -- that's who bets a large dollar. And they have the money to bet large money. As I'm talking about large money -- $30,000 to $40,000 -- even higher. He's one of the heavyweights."

If any of this is true, he may go down as one of the creepiest athletes who I have seen a long while. I’m a pet owner (I have a beagle), and to send animals out to fight, no matter what they are for sport is just wrong and evil.

You would think at this point, Michael Vick being a multi-millionaire many times over and the face of an NFL franchise would know better than to end up on the news for something illicit, but he, like many never learn.

Being a professional athlete is akin to being a CEO – you are the face of a company, and whatever you did, positive or negative affects the standing of it.

The news above was from this weekend; however, there’s now this.

Prosecutor Gerald Poindexter rejected a warrant to search the property formerly owned by Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick for remains of dogs, according to a television report.

ABC affiliate WVEC-TV in Virginia is reporting that Poindexter and the county sheriff "did not like the language" of the warrant approved by a state magistrate and the search was scrapped.

A warrant was requested to search Vick's former property in Surry County, Va., after an informant told authorities seven dogs were destroyed and buried on the lot in late April.

WVEC-TV reported that investigators were going to look behind the main house on the property for the remains of pit bull dogs. The informant, according to the television station's report, also described another time when up to 30 pit bulls were buried on the property.

Police raided the Vick-owned property as part of a drug investigation on April 25 and seized 66 dogs, 55 of them pit bulls, and equipment that could be associated with dog fighting.

The investigation is focused on dog fighting because while some equipment seized could be typical of a legitimate breeding operation, which Vick is registered to have, there also was a "pry bar" used to pry apart a dog's jaws, and bloodstained carpeting.

According to the warrant obtained by WVEC-TV, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Inspector General requested permission to enter a building on the backside of the property to pull up floor boards and wall boards looking for signs of blood. The USDA also wanted to search for items that might have been used to bury animal bodies, the station reported on its Web site.

Vick, who has not been charged, has contended all along he rarely visited the home, where his cousin, Davon Boddie, lived, and has said he didn't know a large kennel on the property could be involved in criminal activity. Vick put the home up for sale shortly after the investigation began and agreed to a sale price with a buyer on the first day.

Oh please. I’m sure he knew, and is lying through his teeth. I smell a cover-up and unwillingness to potentially sully an athlete – an incredible one that.

I’m sure the investigation may or may not find anything; however, just because of all of this, I will never think of Michael Vick in the same way – guilty, or not.

Where there is smoke, there is fire. Michael Vick may think he'll get away with it, but the court of public opinion will take care of him.

We have an athlete well over a 100 million dollars here, and I know if it were any of us, we'd be up the creek right now.

Wither Barry Bonds: Maybe It Is Not To Late to Change; His Pursuit of 755

Today has been a light day here at the office, as I have been catching up on stuff and doing the little things, but I have not blogged like this in a while. The day’s work is almost done and I have the IPod on with Chamillionaire’s “Riding Dirty” in the background, and just got done hearing the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ great song, “Snow”.

First off, I was just reading the news now and to any baseball fan out there, is it little reason why most people find Barry Bonds to be an a**hole?

From ESPN.com:

As Barry Bonds nears his record 756th home run, he's stockpiling quite a collection of souvenirs -- bats, balls, helmets and spikes, pieces of baseball history perfectly suited for the Hall of Fame.

Whether he'll donate any of them to Cooperstown, however, is in doubt.

"I'm not worried about the Hall," the San Francisco slugger said during a recent homer drought. "I take care of me."

No wonder those at the museum are getting concerned, especially with Bonds only 10 homers shy of breaking Hank Aaron's career mark.

"There's uncertainty," Hall vice president Jeff Idelson acknowledged.

Around 35,000 artifacts are shown and stored at the shrine, and about a dozen pertain to Bonds.

There is a bat from his rookie year and cleats from him becoming the first player in the 400-homer/400-steal club. Unsolicited, he sent the bat and ball from his 2,000th hit. A batting practice bat from the 2002 World Series was the last thing Bonds provided.

"Doesn't everybody have the right to decide to do it or not do it?" he said last week.

The most prized items, the ones that fans would really want to see, are missing.

Nothing directly from Bonds to highlight his 500th home run. Ditto for homers 714 and 715, when he tied and passed Babe Ruth. Same for anything tied to him topping Mark McGwire's single-season total of 70.

Well, it is little wonder why a lot of people hate Bonds? Obviously, Barry cannot turn back the clock on the past; however, there’s no time better than the present to change his image.

As he gets closer to the cusp of Hank’s record, Barry should try to be kinder and gentler. He may not care, but his legacy depends greatly on how he handles breaking the record (aside from the drug talk).

If he were smart, he’d wise up and let the people see the mementos that have led to the great moment.

Barry, keep in mind -- there's more to the game than just YOU.

From the Archives: Kevin Millar Giving Love to Paul Bako with Erik Bedard

(click to see the large image...)

Sorry, I found this the other day in my archives while compiling an upcoming gallery of pictures to be posted on this blog. I was at Yankee Stadium on a freezing Sunday when I got a chance to snap this picture.

As we all know, Kevin Millar is a fun loving guy, and as they were walking to the dugout, he decided to show Paul Bako, the Orioles backup catcher some love. In the image, you also see pitcher Erik Bedard accompanying them.

Allison Stokke: The New World of the Internet and Female Athletes...

The Washington Post today has a story on the front page of their website about Allison Stokke, an 18-year old pole vaulter from California who is not getting attention for her athletic or academic achievements, but for the way she looks.

Needless to say, she nor her family does not welcome the attention. She had been featured on various blogs like With Leather and other messsage boards and forums.

Here is the link to the article: Click Here

As a blogger myself who follows baseball and sports for the most part, I think what has happened to Ms. Stokke is a symbol of our times. I have 3 sisters, 2 of them who were collegiate athletes, and she being only 18, any father or older brother seeing their daughter sexualized on the web would be a cause for concern.

If I were in the position of Allison's father, I'd be.

Information travels faster and more efficient than ever, and it sucks that a young athlete's life has had to have been turned upside down as one poster said, "she's a young, beautiful woman and also an athlete".

That being said, I don't see anything pornographic or illicit about the pictures (unlike Ms. Antonella Barba of American Idol) and she may not have much recourse. She might be trapped in this image for time to come, and get unwanted attention, sadly.

Right now, I just see a tremendously good athlete, not some sex symbol. Hopefully, there might be a balance, but most people are visual and see what is front of them and she may be stuck in this.

However, if I were her, I probably would not appreciate the attention for the way I look, but rather for my athletic and academic ability.

In a word fixated on beauty, and with images from the modeling world, Playboy and Maxim, Ms. Stokke is a victim of the public who likes their athletes good looking and proficient at what they do. In the eyes of many, she might be that rare combo.

She might embrace it, she might not – but it is her right to do so.

At her age, though, there is still a level of innocence still expected, and perhaps her family feels it has been taken away from her. For now, it looks like she does not want to venture into a world where she’d be looked upon like Anna Kournikova.

It's not fair, but it is what it is...

Updated: More Thoughts on Allison Stokke and the Whole Debate on the Internet and Blogs...

Quick Hits; The Game Last Night, O's win 9-1...

Well, after taking 2 of 3 from the A’s over the weekend, the Orioles hoped to stop in Kansas City to continue their winning ways.

Well, the unexpected savior of the pitching staff, Steve Trachsel pitched a five-hitter to win his third straight start and lead the Orioles to victory. Personally, I didn’t think he was going to be this good – just merely adequate and a good 5th starter.

It remains to be seen if he can keep up his remarkable run, but although he does not have remarkably good stuff, he gets the ball in play and fools hitters with his array of pitches.

Once again, the Oriole bats did the talking as they scored ten runs en route to victory.

The big boon for the team came in the fourth inning as Ramon Hernandez, who had been slumping, hit a grand slam homer off Scott Elarton.

Also driving in runs were Jay Payton who had two RBI, Aubrey Huff, Kevin Millar and Miguel Tejada had once each.

The Royals and Oriole face off again tonight.

***

Jeff Zrebeic has a recap of last night’s game in which the Orioles dominated.

Jay Gibbons is frustrated by having a terrible time of things at the plate, but this time he does not blame Sam Perlozzo for benching him.

The O, By the Way blog by Bill Ordine has his thoughts of last night’s game.

Washington Post writer Tom Boswell in an article titled “Orioles Have to Learn to Lay Off the Change-up”; he opines that the Orioles need to have an organizational change – starting with the players and front office taking accountability. He notes that it is not the fault of same Perlozzo, but rather a decade of losing, selfish players, and the front office.

Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post mentions that Chad Bradford and Jamie Walker will share the setup role, as well Jay Payton being hot as of late.

The orioles.com has an article up on their web site about the team’s running game – mainly, the stolen base.

The Baltimore Sun has a question with Brian Roberts, this time about what he takes on extended road trips…

O's Win Again, Tejada and Nick Markakis Lead the O's to Victory, 8-4

A’s vs. Orioles - May 27th, 2007

Morning everyone! Hope everyone is having a safe and happy Memorial Day with friends and loved ones out there. As well, with the stuff going on a world away, take out a moment and remember those who are fighting over there. No matter you political affiliation or thoughts, the men and women over there deserve our respect.

The Orioles whipped up again on the A’s at the Yard on a very hot afternoon, winning by a score of 8-4. Yesterday, Joe Blanton from Oakland was the victim of the red-hot Oriole offense as he served up homers to the triumvirate of Miguel Tejada, Melvin Mora and Nick Markakis.

Miguel Tejada has resurged as the power hitter of this team, with his suddenly hot bat and finally hitting the ball out.

Daniel Cabrera, thanks to the offense earned his 4th win, going six innings, striking out 5, giving up 4 runs, and he allowed Nick Swisher to touch up the Orioles for yet another homer, his 5th against the team.

The Orioles embark on a long road trip, as they head to Kansas City this week, then onto Anaheim for the weekend, and Seattle thereafter.

Heather Irvin of Oriole Magic has a preview of the upcoming series in Kansas City, and I was at the game yesterday blogging and giving my thoughts of the action.

***

Well, before I even go into the game recap, there has been a lot of talk, and I mean a lot of talk of Davey Johnson becoming the manager of the Baltimore Orioles again. With fans of the team wanting a winner, and a guy who’s a part of Orioles nostalgia (as he also led the team 2 playoff appearances in the 90’s), fans were giddy about his possible return.

Let’s just say Davey Johnson not happy to have learned this information in an article by Adam Kilgore in today’s Washington Post. In fact, he more or less didn’t know about the chatter, and wanted no part of it. As well, he defended Sam Perlozzo and wondered why he was on the hot seat.

Columnist David Steele of the Baltimore Sun doesn’t find the idea of Davey Johnson coming back to the Orioles to not be a good idea.

Roch Kubtako has more on this.

To be honest, I don’t think he’s coming to the Orioles, but it was nice to wonder for a day or so. At this point, someone from the front office needs to say publicly and with conviction that Sam Perlozzo is the man for the team.

Then again, silence is never good in this situation.

During the game, Daniel Cabrera got hit with a line drive off Shannon Stewart on his lower back, but toughed it out and got the win. As well, the spirits in the clubhouse have risen thanks to a great series with the A’s.

Sam Perlozzo says that the Orioles need to make a move to contend in the AL East, sooner rather than later and he points out it will not be easy.

Anita Marks, a Baltimore Sports personality on ESPN 1300, pens an article on the MASN website on Brian Roberts and his influence on her not only as a player, but a solid citizen in the community.

Live at the Yard -- Blogging on Oriole Magic!

I'm at Camden Yards bloggin live from the game today! Check it out at Oriole Magic!

Mike, Heather and James are doing a bang up job there and I'm glad to be part of the team!

Hope everyone is happy and safe this Memorial Day weekend! It is friggin' searing hot out right now!

Quick Hits: O's Down A's 8-3, Pictures

A’s vs. Orioles -- May 26th, 2007

Last night, the Orioles emerged victorious as they whipped the A’s by a score of 8-3. Well, the offense and the bats finally came together as Miguel Tejada homered for the second straight night and Brian Roberts drove in three runs.

Of course, Nick Swisher hit another homer run against the Orioles, but Brian Buress went six strong innings, as he only gave up one run.

There’s a recap of the game from the Washington Post, the Baltimore Sun, and the Baltimore Examiner.

Rock Kubatko has his thoughts from last night’s game.

Well, in the Baltimore Sun today, there is more talk and speculation of Sam Perlozzo’s job as manager of the team. According to Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun, if the team does decide to terminate Perlozzo, one of the possible replacements may be a face from the past – Davey Johnson.

Rick Maese also has a story on the embattled manager and the Orioles. If Perlozzo gets fired, the next people on the hot seat may be Jim Duquette and Mike Flanagan. It’s a must read as he analyzes the job that the front office has done in acquiring players and building the team in 2007.

Danys Baez came into the game last night, and was, um, shaky. In the same piece Freddie Bynum and Chris Gomez were mentioned.

Nick Markakis has turned into the leader of the Orioles, with his bat doing the talking. There’s more on that topic from Geremy Bass of MLB.com.

Quick Hits - The O's Lose Another Close One: A's Top the O's, 3-2...

A’s and Orioles -- May 25th, 2006

Once again, the Orioles lost another one run game, in a low scoring affair, as the A’s beat us 3-2. The losing spell continues, as we have lost 9 out of 12 games, and the bats are once again very, very cold.

Oakland stud Dan Haren won his fifth straight game, as a he only allowed two hits and a run over seven innings. He was amazing last night and showed why he’s one of the best young guns in the American League.

Erik Bedard had another great outing as he gave up three runs over seven innings, and now he’s got the AL lead in strikeouts.

Nick Swisher once again hit yet another homer off the Orioles, as he hit a two-run homer in the third inning. The A’s other run was driven in by Hiram Bocachica via a sac fly.

The O’s offense came via a Miguel Tejada single that scored Brian Roberts in the first inning, and Kevin Millar homered in the 8th inning.

The two teams match-up again tonight.

***

Jeff Zrebiec has a recap of the action from last night for the Baltimore Sun.

The Washington Post has also has a recap of the game.

Melvin Mora did not play last night, and apparently he found out through a member of the Baltimore media, rather than the manager – not a good move on Sam’s part. Understandably, Mora was upset with the move last night due to the lack of communication and I’m going to take his side on the issue. Roch Kubatko has more thoughts on the issue in his blog.

There’s more from David Ginsburg about Melvin Mora from the Baltimore Examiner, Washington Post and Spencer Fordin of the Orioles.com.

In light of the struggles with former setup man, Danys Baez, the Orioles will now have a bullpen-by-committee according to Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post.

Erik Bedard left last night from the stadium before he could be interviewed by the media. Personally, I don’t care, but honestly, he comes off sometimes as a complete jerk and he should be lucky he’s in the position he has. If it is too much to stick around and give an interview (keep in mind, he’s being paid handsomely), then he should get a desk job.

Matt Palmer of the Baltimore Examiner has a great piece on the event with Kevin Millar at the ESPN Zone on Thursday.

If you’re going to the game this weekend, the traffic might be tough to deal with

Quick Hits: The Game Last Night – More of the Same; Orioles Lose 5-4 to the Jays in 10…

Well, last night the same story repeated itself. There’s no point in going over the game, as it has become a recurring theme.

It seems like with the Orioles; the more things change, the more they stay the same.

The bullpen came in to hold the lead, and keep the game in order.

That did not happen last night.

Sadly, the Orioles lost to the Blue Jays 5-4 in ten innings as Danys Baez came into the game and served up yet another game winning home run, this time to Alex Rios. After the homerun, the Orioles fans let out their frustrations – with boos.

Baez was in the game because Perlozzo somehow could not get extra use out of his relievers (he used four), as Bradford was unavailable; (however, where was Todd Williams?)

At this point, Baez should only come into the games during blowouts, or when there’s absolutely no option. Considering he’s signed with the team for another three years, perhaps send him down to the minors (if he’ll agree) and get himself straight in a low pressure environment.

Folks, he’s cost us several games this year and we’re in the point of the season where the team cannot afford to throw away any games, or it will be over by June.

By then, it may be a long, long, hot summer.

Furthermore, the bullpen has lost its effectiveness, as it cannot hold leads in games. I respect Jim Duquette for trying to rebuild the bullpen, but it is usually not a good idea to overspend for relievers.

On a positive note, Miguel Tejada hit a three run homer, his third of the year and first in well over 100 at bats. Nick Markakis drove in the other run for the Orioles.

Jeremy Guthrie was solid last night as he went seven strong innings and gave up 3 runs. It’s too bad the lead could not have been held for him to earn a win.

As well, Frank Thomas hit his 493rd homer – tying Lou Gehrig.

Next, the pesky A’s come into town and hopefully the Orioles can get themselves in gear.

The Baltimore Sun’s Jeff Zrebeic has a recap of the events last night, as does the Baltimore Examiner and Washington Post.

Adam Loewen may come back soon, at least a lot sooner than I ever expected if the results of his test come back positive on his arm. He’s got the attitude and outlook of a bulldog, and he’s a competitor. Let’s hope he’s back soon, although if he’s not 100%, he should not rush it.

Baltimore Sun blogger Roch Kubatko has his thoughts from last night in his excellent blog, and O, By the Way by Bill Ordine has his take on the matter and other things too.

An Open Letter to Sam Perlozzo - Same Sh*t, Different Day...

Dear Sam,

I'm a concerned fan.

Why would you bring a pitcher who has been struggling (Baez) into a tie game and then allow him to give up the game winning homer and nearly serve up another one.

This is not good. Do you wonder why people want your head?

I'm a guy who never wants to see anyone fired, but moves like this do not help you endear to anyone. I'm fan first, then a critical eye, but the moves you are making are just baffling me and those who follow the Orioles.

You don't read the papers, nor watch TV anymore; however, much of this at times you bring onto yourself...

It will be another field day once again on Friday with your name splattered all over; therefore, yet even more speculation of job security.

I have run out of ways to defend you, and perhaps a change is now in order.

Sincerely,
The Oriole Post

Kevin Millar at the ESPN Zone in Baltimore this Afternoon: Photos and Impressions...

Kevin Millar was at the ESPN Zone this afternoon in Downtown Baltimore at the Inner Harbor and about 150-200 fans took out a moment of their afternoon to hear him talk about the state of the team, his career as well answer questions from loyal Oriole fans. Local sports personality, Tom Davis served as the mediator for the event.

I really didn’t take any notes on what he said partly because I arrived late, and by the time I got there, it was standing room only.

Fans had the opportunity to win free tickets to Orioles games by answering trivia about Millar and about the Orioles.

My impression of Kevin Millar from afar is that in light of the drama, or perhaps turmoil going on with the Baltimore Orioles, he seems to be very personable, positive, insightful about the sport and very down to earth when dealing with the fans.

Although he may be regulated to part-time duty for now, Millar is one of my favorite Orioles due to his attitude, personality and love for the game.

Note: The shots are not the greatest quality, as the lighting inside the facility was just horrible.

Quick Hits: O's Beat the Jays 5-2 Last Night; The Rundown

The Orioles got a much needed win last night at the Yard as Steve Trachsel once again had another quality outing, giving up 3 runs in 6 innings pitched. Sam Perlozzo last night shifted around the batting order to get better results last night, and maybe it worked.

Perhaps the result last night gave the embattled manager a break from the gloom and doom of the past few weeks.

Red-hot Brian Roberts went 3 for 3, and got his average above .300.

The bullpen held the lead, and the team was able to finally win by a score of 5-2.

The O’s won by small ball, and speed as Corey Patterson stole home.

I’m not going to do an extended recap just because I have been so busy today. For those of you interested, I'll have my photos of Kevin Millar and a quick report on the event at the ESPN Zone later on this afternoon when I have more time to myself.

It was a cool hour to have been a part of at the ESPN Zone in the Inner Harbor. For everything going on with the team right now, Kevin Millar is one positive guy, no doubt a team player, and his attitude is very much well needed in the clubhouse.

The Baltimore Sun has a recap of the game last night, as does the Baltimore Examiner and Washington Post. The O, By the Way blog has a recap of last night’s game and erstwhile blogger, Rock Kubatko gives his two cents as well.

Columnist David Steele of the Baltimore Sun has a piece a tad critical of Miguel Tejada, as he is suffering through a power outage and really not helping drive in runs. Miguel’s average may still be above .300, but he’s being paid an exorbitant salary to produce and he’s not doing so. He’s been taking extended batting practice, as well as working with a pitching machine, so it’s not like he’s not putting forth an effort to improve.

Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post has an article as well about his lack of power, and as we all know, Miguel Tejada is ever so vital to the O’s offense, and his bat needs to produce.

Spencer Fordin also has a piece on Miguel Tejada.

The Toronto Blue Jays were not happy with Daniel Cabrera on Tuesday, as he hit Troy Glaus during a pivotal really for the team, and on Wednesday night he was called into Sam Perlozzo’s office. Cabrera says he didn’t do it on purpose, and just missed his location.

The Baltimore Sun has a Q&A, this time with Jeremy Guthrie and the topic is about Sam Perlozzo.

In light of the bad news in Oriole-land of late, a group of Orioles that included Brian Roberts, Jay Gibbons, Adam Loewen, Melvin Mora and Corey Patterson participated in the "Buses for Baseball" event and entertained a group of children with cancer from various local hospitals at the Yard last night. They watched batting practice and spent time with their heroes; therefore, afterwards, they took in a great night of baseball.

The Idiot File: Elijah Dukes

For a guy with so much talent (which 99% of us would envy), Elijah Dukes just doesn’t know any better – does he?

Once again, Elijah may have found himself in more trouble than he realizes. At only 22, he’s been tapped as one of the future young stars in the game, but now that could be in peril.

Well, Elijah Dukes wife, NiShea Gilbert filed for a restraining order against her husband and said she fears for her life, The St. Petersburg Times reported Wednesday.

NiShea Gilbert, a middle-school teacher, said that Dukes allegedly burst into her classroom at lunchtime in April. A frightened Gilbert then ran to the principal and got a deputy, who banished Dukes from the school.

Gilbert told a Florida court that Dukes threatened to kill her and sent her a photo of a handgun to her cell phone.

Gilbert played a voice mail allegedly from Dukes for the newspaper. "You dead, dawg. I ain't even [expletive]. Your kids, too."

Gilbert has filed requests for protection twice in the last month, according to the newspaper. A hearing on her latest request is scheduled for May 30.

"I just don't think I should live in fear," Gilbert told the newspaper. "When [the Rays] go out of town, I come home. When they're at home, I go stay with my mother. I shouldn't have to live like that because he's a baseball player."

When approached by the newspaper before Tuesday night's game, Dukes declined to comment on Gilbert's allegations.

"I'm just going to play ball, that's it," Dukes told the newspaper. "I've got to go. I've got a video game to finish."

If this is true, this man is a sociopath and needs help for sure. It’s been shown time and time again that Dukes has some sort of anger management problem and should get help for it. He needs to learn being an professional athlete is a privilege and not a right.

He’s had chance after chance to rehabilitate himself and get in the good graces of fans, the media and his team.

Apparently, some people never learn.

The Idiot File: Clinton Portis and Chris Samuels

I'm a Redskins fan and love Clinton Portis, but it pains me to do this.

Clinton and his teammate Chris Samuels need to be called out on their idiotic choice of speaking to the media this week. Both men decided to defend Falcons' quarterback Michael Vick and the allegations that he was involved in dog fighting.

In an interview with a TV station in Norfolk, Va, both men made light of Vick's troubles as he is under investigation since a police raid at one of his houses turned up dozens of dogs and items used with dog fighting.

"I don't know if he was fighting dogs or not," Portis said in the interview. "But it's his property; it's his dogs. If that's what he wants to do, do it."

Portis, a native of Laurel, Miss., added: "I know a lot of back roads that got a dog fight if you want to go see it. But they're not bothering those people because those people are not big names. I'm sure there's some police got some dogs that are fighting them, some judges got dogs and everything else."

When Portis suggested that Vick would be "cheated" if charged and convicted, Samuels giggled and said: "Haven't you seen Animal Planet?"

While people have the right to believe as they wish, we have a guy who has been alleged of committing a serious crime and potential felony.

The NFL is not happy with either of them, nor are the Redskins.

In this instance, Clinton and Chris, you both would have served yourselves well by keeping your mouth shut on this issue.

The Game Last Night, A Broken Record: Quick Hits - The Orioles Lose A Close One 6-4 to the Blue Jays, the Rundown and Wither Sam Perlozzo...

The Toronto Blue Jays picked up where they ended last week with the Orioles – yet, another win.

In front of a very sparse crowd, the Orioles lost to the Blue Jays 6-4 as Daniel Cabrera was ineffective, considering he was relatively solid all throughout his starts this season.

After giving up 2 runs in the first four innings, Daniel became unglued as he gave up 4 runs in the fifth inning as Alex Rios, Lyle Overbay, Vernon Wells drove in runs and Cabrers dropped a ball that allowed Jason Phillips to score.

Brian Roberts hit his second homer of the year, and brought the score to 6-4, but the Orioles were not able to muster up any more offense.

Once again, A.J. Burnett had the Orioles’ number as he struck out 8 out a little more than 6 innings.

For the Orioles, Aubrey Huff and Melvin Mora drove in a run each in the loss.

**

The Baltimore Sun’s Jeff Zrebiec has a recap of the game last night, as does the Baltimore Examiner and Orioles MLB site.

Although it seems like the vast majority of Orioles fans want Perlozzo gone, you have to feel bad for the guy and wonder if there’s more at play with the situation. Thus, yesterday, Sam Perlozzo answered his critics and showed a little fire about his situation towards the media. He’s not concerned about his job (though I’d imagine the status would bother him from day to day), and wants to just go out and do things the best he can.

If I were him, I’d do the same thing; just fend of the rumors, the doomsday predictions and do my job.

However, the lack of statements of support from his own players, the front office and those high up in the organization is not good. From the looks of it, he may be series to series, week to week or month to month in terms of his job security.

Silence in this situation is not good.

There’s more on the situation from Adam Kilgore & Spencer Fordin from the Orioles.com.

Roch Kubatko has a great entry in his blog today about the latest with the Orioles including the loss, Adam Loewen and Miguel Tejada. As well, the O, by the Way blog has more on the game last night and on the status of Sam Perlozzo.

According to Adam Kilgore, Corey Patterson is benched because of his current struggles at the plate as of late.

If and when Miguel Tejada takes a day off from the grind of baseball, it will be up to him at the moment, not the manager.

The Baltimore Sun has a question with Erik Bedard about how the ball flies out of Camden Yards at certain times of the year, especially summer.

If you have a moment, read Jeff Zrebeic’s story of Miguel Tejada’s trip to the Hall of Fame on Monday. As well, in the piece there’s news on Corey Patterson, and Danys Baez.

Kevin Millar at the ESPN Zone in Baltimore this Thursday!

Oriole favorite Kevin Millar will offer candid answers and will share insight on the first two months of the Orioles season, as he addresses fans at a lunchtime question-and-answer session at ESPN Zone Baltimore.

Fans of the Orioles first baseman will be able to win prizes, including tickets to an upcoming Orioles game, by answering trivia questions about Millar’s career.

After the Q&A, which will be hosted by an Orioles broadcaster, Millar will sign autographs for all the fans on hand for the event.

The event will take place on Thursday, May 24th at 12PM

Danys Baez...

As much as I and others around Oriole-land have basically beat up on Danys Baez and his struggles of late, you have got to check out the article by Adam Kilgore of the Washington titled, "For Orioles' Baez, Struggle is Relative".

Whether you think he's a bum, or just going through the normal up-and-downs of a season the piece in the Washington Post will put the game of baseball in perspective, and highlight what should be first in life -- family.

Although Danys has been nothing short of horrible as of late, you have to respect a man who goes out and does in his job day in and day out considering he what he has had to deal with, and still does.

Quick Hits: A Day off, the Blue Jays and More Fear, Moaning and Anger...

Yesterday, the Baltimore Orioles needed a reprieve from the daily grind as they played in the Hall of Fame Game in Cooperstown, New York where they took on the Toronto Blue Jays in an exhibition.

The Orioles won the game 13-7 and a catching prospect in the farm system, Brian Bock hit two homers. As well, single-A pitcher, Brandon Erbe struck out six.

Anyhow, the O, By the Way blog has a brief description of the action yesterday, and Childs Walker of the Baltimore Sun has an extended recap of the game as well as some quotes from players and Sam Perlozzo.

There’s also more from the game from the orioles.com website. Also, Earl Weaver spoke in Cooperstown yesterday…

In light of the day off from ‘real’ Major League action, the same concerns about the Orioles remain as the Toronto Blue Jays come back into the Yard tonight. Well, although the team is 10 games behind Boston, they are only 4 games under .500 and 118 more games to go; there is still a lot of time to right the ship.

As bad things have been, it could be a lot worse considering what has happened to the pitching staff in the first two months.

Roch Kubatko updated his blog this morning with thoughts of the upcoming series and other stuff. Also, Spencer Fordin has a mailbag with questions pertaining to the Baltimore Orioles.

From here on out, for the next month or so, we face the Blue Jays, Athletics, Royals, Angels, Mariners, Rockies and the Nationals in order. This is a soft patch in the schedule, and it is vital that the Orioles make the most of the next few weeks.

Unless you have been on vacation away from the United States, or been under a rock – Sam Perlozzo is on the hot seat and his job security is in peril. Again, I will say, as much as we all want to blame Sam Perlozzo, it’s an organizational problem – top to bottom.

Perlozzo is captain of the ship when it comes to managing the team, so he’s culpable for what happens on the field. However, it seems like the more things have changed with the Orioles, the more they have stayed the same. Although the team is much improved from the 2006 version, a lot of same problems remain.

I just think some of the players need to look in the mirror and ask themselves what is my role in the team being 20-24, and what I can do to play better?

If you have a moment, read this piece from Orioles Hangout’s Tony Pente, as it articulates what the problems with the current team is.

Right now, I sense a lot of fan apathy, and if keeps going at this rate, the attendance will dip even further and further down.

Fear, Anger and Moaning -- The Game Today, Reflections of this Weekend & Wither Sam Perlozzo...

(public enemy number one in oriole-land right now...)

Ok, I am not going to review the game yesterday. Long story, short; Erik Bedard pitches a masterful game as he strikes out 12 in seven innings, plus gets two hits and drives in a run. Yet again, he got another no decision.

Why he did not finish the game, I don’t know; however, the Baltimore Sun’s Jeff Zrebiec noted he was tired. I wish he would have stayed in the game, but it was not a big deal.

Super sturdy Brad Bradford comes in for a few outs, and then Danys Baez comes in the game.

I knew then the Orioles were screwed and the Nationals would come back.

Even though the Nationals have an anemic offense and a patchwork starting rotation, they have a lot of heart and they’ll battle; therefore, as I predicted -- I was proven right.

Nook Logan steered the Nationals to victory, as they beat the Orioles 4-3.

Well, once again Sam Perlozzo allows Danys Baez in the game – why? Have we not learned after this week that Baez should *probably* not the setup man. But it looks like he’ll still be in that role…

Once again, the bullpen blew it…

These days, no one is happy with Sam Perlozzo. Although, much of internet land has wanted him gone for a good while (myself not included), now the Baltimore media wants him to be shown the door.

In light of the loss, the Battle of the Beltway was cool to see, and seeing Friday and Saturday’s games, as bad it has been in Oriole-land, the fans do still care about the team. At times, it sounded like a college football game, and it was wonderful to hear the passion of the fans that rooted for either the National or Orioles.

All the games were close and hard fought, and fan lived and died on each pitch towards the end.

If you want a much better feel of the events of this weekend, take out some time and read the Washington Post’s Tom Boswell and his article, “Worth Watching”.

The Baltimore Sun’s Roch Kubatko is trying to comprehend Sunday’s loss. From the comments on his blog, people want him Sam gone. My fellow blogger Mike Boehm wants him gone too, so does Ben from Oriole Central, and Dempsey’s Army goes through the ugly details of Sunday.

David Steele in today’s Sun wants Perlozzo gone as the players have not spoken up for him, or given a vote of confidence. Sadly, if this is the case, he needs to probably leave before the tide gets even worse. In all seriousness, Sam seems to be a good person, but winning is what matters in sports, and it is a very cruel business.

Peter Schmuck, the man who knows all and does so in an ornery fashion, has once again called those who want Perlozzo gone as “message board bozos”, and wonders if Peter Angelos will let Sam go. I feel that Peter very much likes Perlozzo; however, if things do not change, he needs to go as you cannot release the entire team.

Folks, Sam should deserve some of the blame of what’s going on with the Orioles, but a lot of the players need to look in the mirror and wonder what the hell is going on. The offense is anemic, Miguel Tejada is now a singles hitter, and the bullpen cannot supplant the excellent starting pitching.

People want a winner, and it looks like in Baltimore the more things have changed, the more they have stayed the same.

If things don’t get any better, the Oriole by July or August may have to start paying people to the Yard for games…
