If you discuss Dempsey's loutish comments you might also discuss an incident that happened last September when a player hit a foul ball that hit and injured his wife. A number of folks actually called it "abuse" as a joke or that he "assaulted" her.
I'm not defending Dempsey just demonstrating that there's a certain casualness with which people discuss domestic abuse.
