The Idiot File: More on Don Imus and His Comments..

Well, thanks for the feedback on Don Imus. It’s been interesting to say in the least.

I have gotten a few comments and even more email about this topic.

As of now, Don Imus has been suspended from CBS Radio and MSNBC for a period of 2 weeks.

Now, he’s meeting the Rutgers women’s basketball team in the "near future".

From ESPN:

"We would just like to express our great hurt," junior forward and team captain Essence Carson said in announcing the private meeting.

Teammate Matee Ajavon said: "I could say that we honestly don't know what to expect from Don Imus and what we will plan on asking him is his reasons and how you could just say things that you have not put any thought to? Right now I can't really say if we have come to a conclusion of whether we will accept the apology. What I can say I think this meeting will be crucial for us, the state of New Jersey and everybody representing us."

Head coach C. Vivian Stringer said her players "are the best this nation has to offer, and we are so very fortunate to have them at Rutgers University. They are young ladies of class, distinction. They are articulate, they are gifted. They are God's representatives in every sense of the word."
And…

"It's not about them [players] as black or nappy-headed. It's about us as a people," Stringer said. "When there is not equality for all, or when there has been denied equality for one, there has been denied equality for all."

She further said: "While they worked hard in the classroom and accomplished so much and used their gifts and talents, you know, to bring the smiles and the pride within this state in so many people, we had to experience racist and sexist remarks that are deplorable, despicable, and abominable and unconscionable. It hurts me."

Well, I don’t know where Don Imus came from with his comments, but they were nothing short of disgusting and deplorable. From what I see, all the Rutgers women did was play basketball and for them to be brought to the nation’s attention for their race, and not their ability on the court is insulting.

The team that should be celebrated for being runner-ups in the NCAA Tournament is plastered on the news because of the words of Don Imus.

Again, the comments Imus made was racist, but even far more stupid in its own right.

He may not have even realized what he said.

Imus has more than the right to say whatever he wants, but people should not be alarmed if there’s a group that would be upset with him.

We all have said stupid things every once in a while, and wanted to be funny, but there’s times you cross the line and Imus crossed it. Jokes are meant to be funny, and sometimes the validity and purpose of them may be in question, but in this instance, he used it to hurt.

I no doubt believe Imus may be sorry for what he did, and sincerely thought he was trying to be funny, but as an African American, incidents such as these just show we have a long way to go in becoming one nation, not one of races, classes, and ideologies.

Don, you may be a good person, and you surely might be from your charity work, but in the end you cannot be absolved from you utterly stupid comment.

Just because rappers say “ho” and other derogatory language does not make it right. In fact, they are just as stupid as Imus, even moreso, but no woman, black or whit deserves those words said onto them.

We may try to justify all of this, but in the end, the comments from Imus were just beyond stupid and irresponsible.

Should he fired, maybe? However, today he might learn a lesson or two from the women of Rutgers University about what it means to be “good person” as he says he is.
