For the Idiot File: Those Who Voted Against Art Monk Getting into the NFL Hall of Fame...
As were on the cusp of the Super Bowl, the NFL inducted six members into the NFL Hall of Fame - Michael Irvin, Thurman Thomas, Bruce Matthews, Roger Wehrli, Charlie Sanders and Gene Hickerson.
However, one name is glaringly omitted. His name is Art Monk.
I’m a big Redskins fan, and yes, I’d love him to be in as he’s a Redskin; however, he should be in on his merits. According to the Washington Post, Monk made the first cut in balloting by a panel of 40 media members when the field was reduced from 17 to 11 but failed to make the second cut to six candidates.
For the 7th straight year, those who vote players in the Hall of Fame, inexplicably have left Art Monk out. When he retired, he was the leading receiver of all time (the record is now held by Jerry Rice). Apparently, those felt the need to leave out Monk felt, “his career lacked the sort of signature moments that a big-play receiver like Irvin, a key contributor to three Super Bowl titles for the Dallas Cowboys, produced.”
Whatever.
Sorry, if Art Monk was dull, but he was a playmaker on the field. As well, perhaps he lacked some pizzazz, but you don’t break records if you don’t have greatness.
However, if Irvin got in (no, I don’t want any grief from ‘Boys fans), then Monk should definitely get in.
