Quick Hits: O's, MASN, Bronson Arroyo and MLB Stuffage...

Corey Patterson: The Baltimore Sun reports that the Orioles have agreed to terms today on a one-year deal with Corey Patterson, avoiding salary arbitration with their center fielder, according to a club source and will make $4.3 million in '07.

Spring Training Coverage on MASN:

The Mid-Atlantic Sports Network will announce today its plans to broadcast 11 Orioles and Washington Nationals spring training games this year, including four games between the two teams.

All the games will be broadcast on MASN with rebroadcasts scheduled to air primetime the same day for afternoon games, or on the following day for night games.

The schedule marks a significant increase in the number of Orioles and Nationals spring training games that were broadcast last spring. In 2006, two Orioles spring training games and four Nationals games were aired.

The Orioles and Nationals' two exhibitions prior to the start of the 2007 season -- on March 30 in Norfolk, Va. and March 31 at RFK Stadium -- will be among the games televised. For three of the last games in March, MASN will also debut its new 30-minute pre and post-game shows, O's Xtra and Nats Xtra, which will feature news, highlights and analysis.

MASN will telecast more than 320 baseball games this season.

Scheduled Orioles and Nationals spring games on MASN:

March 3, 1:05 p.m. - Orioles vs. Nationals, Viera, Fla.
March 8, 1:05 p.m. - Houston Astros vs. Nationals, Viera, Fla.
March 9, 1:05 p.m. - Nationals vs. Orioles, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Bronson in Cincy: Right handed pitcher and sometimes rocker, Bronson Arroyo and the Cincinnati Reds agreed Thursday to a $25 million, two-year contract extension through 2010. He was an NL All-Star in 2006, & led the major leagues with an amazing 240 2/3 innings pitched and was 14-11 with an ERA of 3.29.

He's a personal favorite of mine as he can rock decently, and also you cannot forget his cornrolls he sported a few years ago.

I still wonder why the Red Sox traded him, and it's a decision that should have never been made.

* Second baseman Jose Castillo and the Pirates avoided arbitration Wednesday, agreeing to a $1.9 million, one-year contract.

* According to ESPN's Buster Olney, The A's have reached an agreement with free agent outfielder Shannon Stewart for a one-year deal that could be worth as much as $2.5 million with incentives, pending a physical.

* Happy Trails: Third baseman Vinny Castilla officially retired from baseball on Wednesday. In a solid career, he 320 homers in a 16-season career with Atlanta, Colorado, Tampa Bay, Houston, Washington and San Diego.

Sure he got off to a great start in 2006 in the NL, but, umm, it's the NL, and the central at that. He benefited from the Pirates, Cubs, and weaker Houston and St. Louis teams in than they were in the past.

And, he still didn't get his 10th win until after the All-Star Break. He was like 8-0 or 9-something for the longest time after a great start, then teams caught on to him and he wasn't as effective.

Guaranteed he is a different pitcher in the AL East last season, that's why he was traded.

Oh, also, I hear rumors that the Red Sox Front Office wasn't crazy about his off the field antics, like in this photo: http://barstoolsports.com/randomt

P.S. He was married at the time, and the Northeastern University chick isn't his wife. More importantly to them, they thought he was too busy with his music during the season, when he should have been focusing more on baseball. Could be seen as dictator-ish, maybe, but when they're paying you, like being clean-cut for the Yankees--you do what they say.

I'll agree the Sox getting Pena wasn't much better--especially now that they may go to arbitration with him, but he's still very young and may be needed with the oft-injured J.D. Drew in the outfield.

M/M - Interesting perspective. I remember him being absolutely devastated when he was traded to the Reds and maybe that woke him up.

I just saw it by a numbers and pitching thing, not his outside influences.

You have a point about being paid for by an entity and abiding by their organizational rules. That's fair enough, and is valid.

I think I based everything on his ability to be an inning-eater and his potential upside. You can say the Red Sox wished they'd kept him in '06.

The Arroyo trade I think was a throw-away one, but maybe it took a shock to get to him to the next level in terms of being a pitcher.

So glad to see MASN is carrying some Spring Training games. I'm psyched that I have DirecTV so I can watch the O's in action.

This A-Rod situation is getting out of control. The media is all over this guy. It's crazy.

Looks like MASN is making some headway -- yeah, A-Rod will be stalked no matter what, I really feel he's passed the realm of athlete, and is more like a 'personality'.

Jeter is in the same fold, but he can handle it.

I think sometimes the media obsession with him is beyond crazy...
