Quick Hits: Orioles Opening Day

Well, Opening Day for the Orioles did not go as planned, sadly. The Orioles lost to the Minnesota Twins 7-4, where there was a sellout crowd at the Metrodome.

Our ace Erik Bedard only went 4 2/3 innings, and got hit hard giving up back to back homers to reigning American League MVP, Justin Morneau and Torii Hunter. Bedard’s command was off, and he let a passed ball allow in a run.

The Orioles were down in the first inning, but battled backed to tie the game until a few runs were allowed in the fifth.

Santana was ok, not great, but good enough to win.

However, Miguel Tejada hit a home run, Aubrey Huff was 2-4 with an RBI, Nick Markakis looked awesome in right field, and man, could Paul Bako ever take a hit!

Jeff Zrebeic has more on the game, as does Dan Connolly. Jorge Arangure of the Washington Post gives his take on the action from yesterday.

Esrtwhile Baltimore Sun blogger, Roch Kubatko lets us know his thoughts of the action yesterday.

As noted, the Orioles lost yesterday, and Rick Maese lets us know about it.

The Baltimore Orioles admire what Minnesota has been able to do as a small market team, and the organization hopes to emulate that.

Ramon Hernandez is hurt. He strained his oblique muscle, and will miss at least the first series in Minnesota (hopefully not longer). There’s more on the injury from Orioles.com. Jorge Arangure of the Washington Post reports with the Hernandez injury, the Orioles called up Alberto Castillo from Class AAA Norfolk.

However, reliever Brian Burress got sent down to Norfolk. In the same piece, Reliever Todd Williams is in the minors, and the Orioles are looking to unload him in a trade if at all possible.

Hey Anthony,

Bedard was not sharp but I put that passed ball squarely on the shoulders of Paul Bako. It should've been handled. The only thing I'll say in Bako's defense is maybe he was woozy...

Bako was awful. He should be replaced. AT least the 3rd string guy is under 100 years old and might learn something from his mistakes.

Of course, we might all just be wrong about what we saw. The MASN broadcast was so god awful that maybe the O's actually won the game and they just gave such a crappy account of it that it made it look like they lost

Yes, the responsibility of a passed ball my be the pitcher's, but the catcher is ultimately the guy who has to stop it.

Bako might have been out of it, yes... He gets a pass. Even the best sometimes let a ball get past them.

Mike - you're right no doubt about the game on MASN ... awful
