The Coarsening of Sports, Part XXX: Even When the Goings' Good, T.O. Gets Stupid
Even though the Dallas Cowboys are close to a playoff spot and leading the NFC East, resident idiot Terrell Owens decided to spit in the face of The Atlanta Falcons' DeAngelo Hall on Sunday.
Idiot. Why do we praise this man and give him face time? His behavior borders on sociopathic tendencies, if you ask me. Parcells, please school him.
I agree with Hall with this statement: ""I think, for what he did, he deserves more than a fine," Hall said on Sunday. "The guy has all the money in the world. He's making $10 million or whatever this year. So what's a fine going to mean to him, really? What he did, it was [vulgar], you know? But he's a great player, a great competitor, and what would hurt him a lot more than a fine is making him sit. That would get his attention. And that's what I think the league should do. They need to do something pretty [severe], because there's something wrong with him, and he just can't get away with this kind of stuff." (from ESPN)
Damn straight, he's right. There are some things you don't do to a human, although it may not hurt physically. Spitting is one them...
If I did this, I'd be arrested with the possibly of going to court with a dismeanor, or perhaps an ass-kicking to along with it. The fine is a drop int he bucket for Mr. Owens and grants more time on the tube and on the sports' networks.
Since Mr. Owens is getting a slap on the wrist, what lesson does it teach us? As long as someone like Mr. Owens still gets to style and profile, score touchtown and show his pearly whites in interviews, nothing is learned and gives other idiots the incentive to do something stupid.
I can only imagine what David Stern would do...
