David Stern Laying Down the Law...

Honestly, I knew this was coming and Carmelo was going to get. The good ol' NBA certainly did not show any mercy on both the Knicks and Nuggets. Late this afternoon, Stern brought down the hammer and according to ESPN, seven on Monday were given suspensions totaling 47 games.

Carmelo got the brunt of it - 15 games. After the brawl, Stern is sending a message to everyone that such acts of boorishness and stupidity will not be accepted.

As well, each team got suspended $500,000.

I have never heard of a team being fined, is this a precedent?

I certainly agree that fist-fights, brawls and related behavior should not be condoned. What happened at MSG was not excusable and should be deplored.

However, I feel like there is a double standard regarding fighting in pro-sports.

Why (in my opinion) is fighting condoned in hockey and bench- clearing brawls in baseball "enjoyed" or simply tolerated as something that "just happens in baseball" and seen as traditional.

Whereas, NBA players are portrayed as thugs and are crucified in the media and the public far more the players in the other major sports where just as many, if not more, fights occurs.

You've got to wonder. Does anyone see my point?

Thanks for the Post, DC. Yes, I agree with your sentiments to an extent, it was actually going to be a topic for another blog this week.

My feeling sort of mirrors a topic I have been thinking about. Why does the NBA rail against allowing high-schoolers coming into basketball while MLB allows teams to setup camps in Latin America and give contracts to 16 year olds?

If you can see the forest from the trees, the answer might be clearer than it is.

It's about class, those in control and "perception is reality"...

In some sports like auto racing, "boys can be boys", and sports like football (to an extent) and basketball (an extreme), players are seen as "thugs" and "criminals".

Food for thought and definitely will be approached in a future post!
