Now you tell us, Eh? The Orioles were after Schmidt; Jay Payton an O?
Just saw this, but the Orioles were apparently in the running for Jason Schmidt until the end.
Interesting Quote: "In the end, it was the West Coast bias," said Jim Duquette, Baltimore's vice president of baseball operations. "That's what [agent] Gregg [Clifton] relayed to us."
And another: Duquette said the Orioles made a "very significant" offer to Schmidt, who wound up signing for three years and $47 million. The executives thought they were in the running all the way until the end, which was surprising, because Baltimore's interest went all but unreported over the last few days.
"What's the harm, other than the time we put in on him? ... You've got to be in the game to get him," Duquette said. "Maybe, in some ways, they were using us to jack up the price. In this particular case, we didn't feel that way."
He was not coming here. Perhaps the Schmidt's agent happened to use the O's to push up his price!
In other news, perhaps Jay Payton may be in left field. We have an offer of 2 years for an undisclosed sum on the table.
We shall see...
