Melvin Mora and Cal Ripken to Build Baseball Academy in Venezuela...
According to Spencer Fordin, who writes for MLB on orioles.com, Cal Ripken and Melvin Mora, current O's third baseman have teamed together to build a baseball Academy in Melvin's home country, Venezuela.
The plans are to build a number of baseball fields, and a stadium that will seat up to 25,000 people. It looks like the groundwork has been done, and now Melvin is taking a trip to there get support and government funds for the project. Ripken is a partner in the venture, and knows a thing or two about building up a baseball academy, as he owns a few minor league teams, sporting complexes and runs his own company, with his brother, Bill.
Both Mora and Ripken hope to have major league teams rent space so talent could be cultivated in Venezuela, which is another hot bed of baseball, the homeland of All-Stars Johan Santana & Bobby Abreu.
This is a win-win for both Mora and Ripken, and as well, potentially the Orioles, as it would give the Orioles another foothold in Latin America to cultivate and foster talent.
