Quick Hits...

  • Orioles.com beat writer Spencer Fordin in his latest article writes about the Aubrey Huff impact with the Jay Payton signing and the expectations for him with the team. Also the article looks at the situation with Rodrigo Lopez, Hayden Penn’s status for ’07 and where’s former O’s catcher Javy Lopez?
  • J.D. Drew is still waiting to become a member of the Red Sox. Take a look at Murray Chass’s article. Ridiculous.

  • The University of Florida whooped on Ohio State 41-14 to win the National Championship in college football. Whoa. I thought there would have been much more of a challenge from OSU and that game would have been closer.

Honorable Mention: I found this website, The Road Less Traveled, the other day and found what the creator did with the site to be wonderful. Although I am not from the Boston area, I know quite a bit of people from there who live in the Mid-Atlantic region and I can relate to a lot of what’s on the site. The insight is great, you can have a few laughs on it and he’s got some cool photographs on it as well. Check it out!

Sometimes I wonder if all of a sudden I'm going to read a story that J.D. Drew has mysteriously vanished. Kudos to Theo Epstein for "coming to terms" to please Boras enough to work the Matsuzaka deal, only to have it held up with a long list of physicals. I wouldn't be surprised if the language is changed in the deal to reflect Drew's performance incentives: maybe he gets the full $70 million if he plays at least 140 games each of the five seasons? I'd certainly be more comfortbale with that.

My friend, giving him his pay based on performance would make too much sense.

My thing is if you were going to give J.D. that amount of money, why did you not do it for Johnny Damon who is more durable and had actually better all-around numbers than Drew?

MD O's Fan, I don't think you can find a single person in Boston who can explain that question of yours. It's a recurring theme these past few years with signings of those who you question can play in such a tough media market, and the non-signings of those who you know have done it before. Not only was Damon durable, he relished the media attention and the fan base. If I'm not mistaken, everyone in Boston is against this signing, though unless you bring Nixon back for a lot less money and about the same health, there aren't many other options out there.
