Quick Hits: O's Related

Gary Throne part of MASN?

I just read this from the Baltimore Sun’s Ray Frager:

“The Web site dcrtv.com -- a great source of scuttlebutt about Washington-Baltimore broadcasting matters -- reports a rumor that veteran sportscaster Gary Thorne will be the Orioles play-by-play voice on Mid-Atlantic Sports Network. Todd Webster, MASN's spokesman, said no decision has been made yet, but "we are talking with current and prospective candidates for the position." If MASN goes outside to add a TV voice, that would appear to end the previous arrangement of having Jim Hunter or Fred Manfra alternating between TV and radio. And it seems three full-time radio guys -- Manfra, Hunter and Joe Angel -- would be one more than the Orioles need.”

This is an interesting development. I like Gary Throne on hockey and baseball, and if I can recall, he’s sort like a jack of all trades guy. He’s got a distinct voice and I say the more premier talent, the better.

I don’t know if he’d fit in with MASN, but Throne is a great talent. Recently, MASN hired Don Sutton for its Nationals’ broadcasts, so perhaps it is trying to find established nationally known talent to help out the fledgling network.
