Quick Hits: The Civil Rights Game and O's News...

Evening everyone!

Well, I am thinking of heading to Memphis, TN next Saturday to catch the Cleveland Indians take on the St. Louis Cardinals in the first annual Civil Rights Game. This may only be a Spring Training game right on the cusp of the season; however, considering my background, it’s definitely something I’d very much like to witness. As well, considering baseball’s small, but pivotal role in the Civil Rights movement, this event is one of importance.

For those of who don’t know the significance of Memphis in the Civil Rights movement, it is he home of the National Civil Rights Museum and the city where Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968.

I’m deciding whether to drive (a 12-13 hour trip by car) or fly there; nevertheless, it is something I am contemplating to be a part of.

Orioles News:

  • The Orioles today announced that they have claimed right-handed pitcher Sean Tracey off waivers from the Chicago White Sox. To make room for Tracey on the 40-man roster, the Orioles transferred pitcher Kris Benson to the 60-day disabled list and released Roger Cedeno.

  • Erik Bedard looked great as he allowed one hit (a solo HR by Jason Varitek) and struck out 8 in 5 innings, but the Orioles lost to the Red Sox 3-2. Check out Oriole Hangout for a quick game recap…

  • Roch Kubatko updates his blog and lets us know about new pitcher, Sean Tracey

  • Read what Curt Schilling has to say about his game against the Orioles today. I find it just fascinating how Schill can recall an outing in such elaborate detail. Personally, I am not a big fan of Schill, but I really like what he is doing with his blog and giving fans the insight of what a pitcher thinks. (Thanks to Ian of Random Thoughts for the tip…)
