Quick Hits - Fast and Early O's News...

The Orioles had a great day yesterday, taking on the Red Sox and bally-hooed and hyped Daisuke Matsuzaka. I watched some of the game on NESN, and while he looked downright unhittable a full of tricks, he seemed at times to look like a normal pitcher, especially after the first innings.

I think Daisuke will be an above average pitcher just because of his arsenal, but I have seen his last two games and he was definitely off on Sunday.

Here’s a recap of the game from Orioles.com site as well as the Baltimore Sun.

The Washington Post’s Jorge Arangure has notes on the game yesterday and John Knott’s blast off the hyped rookie & reports Jason Dubois is a long shot to make the team.

Here’s more reflection of the game, this time from the Examiner.

Rock Kubatko of the Baltimore Sun pens a great article about the game yesterday, and lets us all know the atmosphere in the Orioles locker room with the Japanese press, along with reflections from the players. Peter Schmuck gives us his impressions.

Spencer Fordin of Orioles.com knows what we all know – there are high hopes for the trio of Erik Bedard, Daniel Cabrera and Adam Loewen. Meanwhile, because of the new additions to the bullpen, John Parrish and Kurt Birkins may be out of the fold, as manager Sam Perlozzo is not sure whether or not he’ll keep 2 lefty arms.

The Examiner has a piece of Jamie Walker.

The Baltimore Sun has a Q&A with AAA Norfolk Tides manager, Gary Allenson.

I found a brutal article about the Orioles and how they compare to the Nationals last week, and just now remembered to link to it. The Washington Times Thom Loverro feels that the Washington Nationals have a bright future, although they'll be bad (which I agree with wholeheartedly), while the Orioles are destined to gloom and doom while Peter Angelos runs the team.

Gyroball, what?

So far, Matsuzaka hasn't impressed me much. All I see is a lot of hype and big talk, and excuses....but no good pitching.

I hope he's a $103 million flop.

D-Mat will be ok, but the MLB is stock full of professional hitters, so he'll always have to be on.

I think his gyroball is just a modified breaking ball/changeup in which the grip and relase point might be different.

Personally, I think it's just urban legend. I don't think he'll be a flop, but he won't win Cy Young.

In the end, he'll make the Red Sox a whole lot of money, and that was too an ulterior motive for the signing.

Guys guys, the gyro-ball DOESN'T exist.

Even Matsuzaka himself has said he doesn't throw it. What he is throwing is a kind of modified change-up with some screwball action to it.

He will get figured out and the gimmick of his "supposed" magic pitch will not carry him.

He won't be a flop, but he will not be worth the money that the SAWKS spent on him.
